Laurent Joffrin leaves Liberation on Monday to launch a political movement

The co-manager and managing editor will launch an appeal on Sunday evening to rethink the left.

Laurent Joffrin accelerates the tempo. Sunday evening, he will publish to AFP a call for the overhaul of a social, ecological and republican left and will hold a press conference on Monday morning to detail his initiative. That same Monday morning, he will quit all his functions as co-manager, director of publication and director of editorial staff at Release as Aude Dassonville’s tweet revealed.

Laurent Joffrin will however remain a columnist at Release and will continue to publish its daily newsletter.

At 68, the journalist who alternately headed the editorial staff of and Release, tackles political life. “First, I will create an association to defend ideas and define a strategy in order to rebuild a democratic left. This will lead to the creation of a new movement. This initiative fits naturally into the presidential perspective», He explains to Figaro.

Restructuring at Liberation

This departure corresponds to a profound transformation of everyday life Release, bought in 2015 by Patrick Drahi, the boss of Altice. Its shareholder decided to transfer, at the beginning of September, Release in an endowment fund for the press, a foundation which ensured its independence. Altice Medias will meet the accumulated liabilities and endow the fund “The means necessary to finance its future operation”. Laurent Joffrin will become one of the three administrators of this endowment fund.

Monday morning, Laurent Joffrin will meet with the editorial staff of the daily to explain his approach. In a press release, the latter indicated that they had taken note of his project and indicated that “This new personal commitment is incompatible with the pursuit of any editorial activity within Liberation”. Editorial management will be provided by his assistant Paul Quinio.
