Île-de-France: suburban buses will soon allow a descent between two stops

Île-de-France Mobilités plans to gradually expand this service from 2021.

«I have often felt insecure on the 10 minute journey from the bus stop to my home. It is a path without lighting, enclosed between a city and a railway line», Confides Quentin, an inhabitant of Villiers-sur-Marne (Val-de-Marne). Same feeling for Sébastien *, usual user of line 164, in Colombes (Haute de Seine): “One evening when the bus was packed, a visibly drunk man came in screaming. He approached a passenger and began to stare at him until the latter, frightened, gave way to him.“. These scenes punctuate the daily journeys of the Colombian who walks, each evening, with a hurry as soon as he gets off the bus to return home.

To alleviate this feeling of insecurity, buses in the inner and outer suburbs of Île de France will allow doors to open between two stops, starting next year. “This service will be available from 10 p.m. It is intended for lines on which the stops are far from each other. This will allow travelers to gain 50 to 100 meters on their route», Specifies Île-de-France Mobilités, Île-de-France transport union, at Figaro.

Posters will be placed on the affected buses to inform passengers. Users will then only have to approach the driver at the stop before their descent and ask him to stop at a specific location. “Of course, it will be necessary to agree on a safe place for the safety of all. In addition, this stop will only be possible on the route initially planned. There is no point in asking for a detour», Specifies Île-de-France Mobilités.

An experiment «conclusive»

This launch is the result of an experiment launched “in 2018 and tested today on around sixty lines“. This is particularly the case with the Mélibus network in Seine-et-Marne or TRA in Seine-Saint-Denis. “The now makes it possible to go beyond the experimental stage to perpetuate this service and extend it to other lines», Explains the Syndicat des transports d’Île-de-France.

«A good thing», Greet Quentin and Sébastien warmly. “Provided it is used correctly. I can imagine the drift with users asking for stops without real need», Points out the latter. “It was a real question before the start of the experiments. We did not find any incivility. Each evening, there were one or two requests on the lines concerned“, Replies Île-de-France Mobilités which has observed, for two years, a”real demand, both men and women».

The service should thus multiply. “This will be done network by network», Foresees the union. While it tends to be generalized across all networks in the inner and outer suburbs, no deployment schedule has yet been set.
